Bill of Material (BoM) and Component Placement List (CPL aka Pick & Place List) are two of the most important documents for EMS company. Analysis of BOM and CPL is always necessary to give a quotation to the customer. Usually, the customer’s main input to start the EMS process is the set of BoM, CPL and Board designs (in Gerber or other formats).
One of the first activities is to analyze the BoM with CPL and ensure that Manufacturing Part Numbers (MPNs) on components are mentioned or not if not, the component should be suggested based on description matching. Once the entire BoM has been completed with MPNs, it is necessary to check prices and market availability, usually by sending inquiries to multiple suppliers and selecting suitable suppliers after receiving a quotation.
The second part is to calculate the assembly process cost based on some inputs. This whole process can take several hours to several days depending on how fast you can process the BOM and get the component prices.
